One of the greatest benefits of AC coupling is that it allows virtually any type of power generating device to be connected to the system, i.e. solar, wind, water, even gas or diesel powered generators. This provides system designers the opportunity to take advantage of all the resources available to them at a given location.It also allows for easy system expansion by providing a simple solution for integrating future power sources. The Sunny Island SI5048U inverter has also been designed for easy expansion. The power provided by the Sunny Island can be increased simply be adding an additional Sunny Island power inverter in parallel. AC Coupling The AC coupling of off-grid PV systems is becoming more and more popular the world over. As the demand for power increases, new sources of power can be installed and connected to the AC bus instantly increasing the overall capacity of the system. The Concept In remote off-grid power scenarios, a Sunny Island power inverter connected to a bank of batteries acts as the source of AC power, or the “AC grid” for that location. All power generation devices as well as AC loads are connected together on the AC side of the inverter. During the day, when sun production is high and load use is low, the Sunny Island uses the sun power to charge the batteries. Once the batteries are full, any daytime loads are powered directly from the power generating devices on the AC bus. The SMA RS-485 is for those situations where a power line carrier won't work. When you have to link not just several inverters, but several Sunny Boy Controls, the RS-485 is the tool to use. This current-source buss line system allows simultaneous communication with many nodes to one central controller. And with its ability to link several Sunny Boy Controls, the number of Sunny Boy inverters that you can control from one computer becomes virtually infinite.

SMA Sunny Beam Wireless System Monitor

4/2007 Sunny Beam software/chip issue

The National Electric Code (NEC) and UL 1741-2005 has triggered an industry wide redesign of all inverters. This redesign and release of new inverters has caused a redesign of the Sunny Beam.

The current (new) Sunny Beam will NOT function correctly if at all with the old family of inverters (i.e. SB 700, 1100, 1800, 2100, 2500, 3300, 3800 and the old chassis 6000).

The SMA Combi-Switch

The SMA Combi-Switch was specially designed with installers in mind. It provides the code-required external DC disconnect and protection for the SB6000U Inverter all in one small enclosure. The Combi-Switch allows for up to four PV strings to be landed on individual Touch Safe fuse holders. 10 Amp fuses are provided for PV string over-current protection. The fuse outputs are then combined and routed through the disconnect switch. One pair of wires conveniently connects the entire PV array to the SB6000U's DC inputs. The familiar enclosure is NEMA 3R rated for outdoor installation. Numerous knockout rings are provided for simplified conduit installation. The SMA Combi-Switch is also ETL listed to UL 1741.

The new SMA Sunny WebBox is a powerful communication tool that allows the operating data of your photovoltaic system to be logged and easily transmitted via modem or Ethernet to the Web or directly to your PC. It can also send the data to SMA's new internet portal (Sunny Portal) which provides free long-term data storage and graphical display of your system data. Collected information is stored in common file formats so that you can use it in various spreadsheets, graphs or your own website. The Sunny WebBox is extremely versatile; making the storage, transmission, management, and display of your system data easier than ever before.

A New Standard in Communication

The Sunny WebBox provides complete plant monitoring, remote diagnosis, data storage and display at an affordable price. It features an integrated HTTP web interface that allows you to access plant information via a PC, regardless of operating system or browser type.

The Sunny WebBox is the link between the Sunny Boy PV plant and its owner. It combines computing power, storage capacity, and versatile communications interfaces in a compact enclosure. Networked with the Sunny Portal, the data-logger offers up-to-date display and control options on the internet.

The Sunny WebBox supports RS-485 for data transfer to and from all SMA utility interactive inverters. The SMA Sunny WebBox requires a RS-485 piggy back card to connect to the Sunny Boy inverter. The Sunny Beam and the Sunny WebBox can't work simultaneously on the same inverter.

Data transfer and plant configuration via the internet is handled either by Ethernet connection or telephone modem. Data transfer is automatic – all you have to do is set the desired intervals. A single Sunny WebBox can monitor up to 50 Sunny Boy Inverters; an even greater savings when used in larger Sunny Boy solar electric plants.

Check the status of your PV plant – from your home, your office or anywhere you may be. A PC with an internet browser is all that is needed to access the Sunny WebBox.

The Sunny WebBox is equipped with its own web server that is preconfigured to work with your internet browser. This allows you to view the output of your plant and the operating channels of each inverter. You can also adjust the parameters of the Sunny WebBox via your web browser.

The Sunny WebBox can also be used in combination with SMA’s Sunny Portal website (www.sunnyportal.com). The new Sunny SensorBox from SMA: compact, easy to install, attractive price. And ideally suited to further refine performance analysis of solar power stations. With the Sunny SensorBox, it is now possible to acquire environmental data also, such as irradiation and module temperature, in order to detect any PV module faults promptly. In this way, we meet solar power station operators' demand for complete system monitoring, also on the generator side, and make another contribution towards maximum yield security.

Easy to Install and Optionally Extendible

The Sunny SensorBox is easily installed outdoors at the solar generator, and has an integrated solar cell, which measures solar irradiation. Module temperature is measured by means of the temperature sensor which is also provided on delivery. From these two values, it is then possible to calculate the expected output, and to compare it with the actual measured output of the inverters. Via the SMA data logger, Sunny WebBox, the data is transferred to a PC for further processing, or to the Sunny Portal for automatic performance analysis. The Sunny SensorBox also enables the connection of additional sensors, e.g. to measure the ambient temperature or wind speed, for calculations which are even more precise, and for optimal system control.
